Abstract

This paper investigates a three-phase transformerless series active power filter based on open-end connections. The studied system was designed to mitigate power quality issues, including voltage harmonics, as well as balanced and unbalanced voltage sags and swells. The topology operates with the fourth wire connected through an additional leg. The developed control strategy eliminates the need for phase jumps in the load voltage, operates independently of the load power factor, and does not require fixed DC sources at the DC-link, making it a simpler and more efficient solution when compared with conventional approaches. The system model, the pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme, and the design of the controllers and passive components are presented, while the overall control methodology is discussed in detail. In addition, a comparative analysis among the considered topologies is carried out. Finally, simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed system.
